and indeed ls gives different outputs depending on age of file, eg

Are you sure i cannot go back to stable ?
I don't think so, at least not without reinstalling. You can upgrade from
Woody (old stable) to sarge (current stable) or from stable to testing or
unstable. But there is no easy way to downgr
et upgrade'? But then, when would I get to know when
the bugs have been fixed so it's okay to install them (presuming having

I have always read that a desktop should not be
running on a server but there is never an explanation
as to why.
To my intention the main reason is only to install software on a
server which is
ested the main thing I'll be doing is running xterms on remote
machines pointed back to mine at home but I've not idea how much traffic
X involves.
Thanks!

) can you connect with ssh hostname
b) with ssh IPaddress
c) with putty & hostname
d) with putty & IPaddress
if yes to b and d, but not to a and c, then it's a DNS thing.
if yes to a and b, but no to c or d, then it's a putty thing.

I looked around but can't see why I'm getting
error while loading shared libraries: libimf.so: cannot open shared object
file: No such file or directory
when I try and run a code compiled with Intel's 9.0 C/C++ compiler on my
'unstable' box. More info below
