National Semiconductor DP8381x series PCI internet support and a Netgear

With kernel 2.4.26 my Sony USB dvdrw drive is at /dev/sr1.
With kernel 2.6.8 there is no /dev/sr1 and the drive is not accessable

hard disk crash wiped out everything. With Windows I always had to be

a boot floppy. The floppy produced does not work - a disappointment
since I had hoped to use it to recover from a disk crash on a second

The script did alter lilo on this computer which now boots to

I ran apt-get install mutt in hopes of setting up a mail box with
threading for this list. There does not seem to be any POP3 connection

Trying to make printer (brother HL-730 on parallel port) work from
debian linux 2.2.19:

and from Abiword in ximian gnome desk top. Compiled the kernel with
parallel printer support and autoprobe.

I have discovered that apsfilterconfig writes three filters for my
Brother HL-730 laser printer (which can simulate an HP LJIIP). In the
printcap file it generates I find

raw|jet2p-letter-raw|jet2p.
Used apt-get install to install cupsys and cupsys-bsd. This solved all
my problems with a a Brother HL-730 laser printer on a parallel port.
A second stand-alone computer with a Epson Stylus Color 860 connected to
the usb port is still not working. The stcolor.ppd and lpinfo are missing.
Installation of Ximian Gnome Desktop failed, left problems I can't resolve.
Last week I started download/installation of the full ximian gnome
desktop from the ximian web site. The lengthy download timed out at
about 50%. When restarted it completed the download of 319 files then

I have a LAN connecting three Debian systems. Until now there has never
been a need to share printers as pre-LAN each system had its own printer.
Now one printer has died and we wish to share. I have references on
Samba and Swat but they refer to sharing among Windows and NT systems.
