The problem was that pump was not installed and I didn't know I needed it. Woody was installed from a CD set several months ago.
Once I understood it was needed, I was able to install pump from the CD set and then route set the gateway. Bingo, I was on line. Apt-get dist-upgrade ran in 15 minutes! Great!
