Is there any way to find out what processes are causing a transfer of
data across the network card?
Netspeed applet shows a continuous download rate of about 10kbytes per
second and I am unable to figure out what process is causing that.

Does the command 'id root' give you an error? If yes, then there are
probably some issues far more serious than a misbehaving app!
Check your passwd and shadow files and make sure they are in order.
Check your sudoers file for anything weird.

Closed gdmsetup and launched it again. No password asked.
Closed gdmsetup, changed root password from a terminal and relaunched
the gdmsetup. No prompt for password, but got an error saying that the
wrong password has been supplied.

in /etc/sudoers)
Please experiment by providing your old/new password in each case and

Very interesting. While I am not aware of any such app, doesn't
"cat > /dev/lp0" (or equivalent) work?
