I'm running Testing on a PII 350 and attempted to do
a dist-upgrade last night. Here is the results of the
apt-get -u dist-upgrade.
My questions is why is it trying to remove the
task-x-window-system-core? If I did this wouldn't I
have lost my "Desktop" and only had text only mode?
Why can't he do a dpkg--purge then do a apt-get clean ?

depends was libpostproc0 which had a depend of libc6.

open xman and then manual page and look for a man page
for example on mp3burn, I can see it in the list, but

libasound2 from unstable and also liblircclient0,
libmud0 and libsdl1.2debian from testing. Then add
this to your /etc/apt/sources.list do a apt-get update
apt-get install mplayer-686 mplayer-fonts

I do not agree with the general consensus that the
Debian installation is that hard. No it does not see
how much disk space you have like Mandrake and then
install what it thinks that you need, it leaves that

Alex therre are at least two versions of Xfree on
Woody, which Xfree are you using. I know when I
upgraded to Woody my X Server would not start either,
I had to download the xserver seperately. And if your
using 4.?.? the xconfig file is XF86Config-4.

I was looking at updating a Potato 2.2.r3 running
kernel 2.4.9 (from Bunks page) to Woody. Following
this list I have noticed all of the problems woth x
font and the Xserver's. I did a apt-get update
pointing to the testing and then did a apt-get -u
dist-upgrade and looked at the list of packages
With Debian you have to give permission for the user
to use sound i.e. as su or root adduser
audio. With the maestro3 on my laptop I also had to
make sure that the ac97_core.o driver was available.
The way that I did it was add maestro3 and ac97_core
to my /etc/modules .

During the install did you notice if xserver-xfree86
was installed? If your unable to do dpkg-configure
xserver-xfree86 then xserver-xfree86 did not get
installed when you did the upgrade (that was my
problem). You can look in /var/cache/apt/archives and
see if that package is there, if not do a
try dpkg-configure xserver-xfree86 That is assuming
that it downloaded when you upgraded. Check to make
sure that you have it installed.

You can try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and
during that choose 1024x768 as the window size.. I'm
guess that you accepted the options that it provided
to you when you first did your setup. Or you can go
in an edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and in there add the
1024x768 option. That is the screen

N5450 Laptop and this system uses a Accton en2242 nic
card that uses the tulip driver. I know that I've
seen this discussed on this list but I am unable to
find it. I have downloaded the drivers for the card
and did a cp pci-scan.o tulip.o
I did a lsmod and it was not listed so I assumed that
it was not installed... So I did not set it up. I'll
chceck it out.

configuration that you have for your Windows partation
"other=/dev/hda1" on a HP Pavilion 5450 my Windows Me
would not boot up.. It gave the error message that It
was missing the command.com file. When I realized
what was wrong I changed it to "other=/d
Another way to do it is to do a apt-get remove xdm and
its gone forever until you reinstall it.

I checked again this morning and I have a Accton
EN2242 NIC card.. So I asume that I still use the
tulip.o driver.

I have the same setup, Laptop with ME and wanted to
install Debian. What I did was first do a Scan disk
then did a defrag then I went to one of the Debian
mirror sites and downloaded a copy of FIPS and folowed

I'm running Woody with currently kernel-2.4.9 and I'm
trying to build kernel-2.4.16 with kpkg-make. I tried
to use the config-2.4.9 that I am currently using but
it gave me a ton of error's sbout USB so I did the
make xconfig and selected/deselected the things that I
needed/didn't need and it star

This might be a really DUHHH response, but if you
have the folder open and minimized, then download
something to that folder, did you do a refreash after
you opened it from being minimized?
