Check if telnetd is running in standalone mode. I don't know about
telnetd, but exim is by default also called by inetd. If you disable it
in inetd, it will run in standalone mode, unless you also disable that.

Maybe you want to take a look at partimage.

select all the packages on your own. However, after installing KDE you
can safeley remove the kde package because it is not needed to run KDE
- it is only there to make installing kde more convenient.

dated 2.4 packages however have slightly different names. So if you
want to update your current kernel package, you have to install
kernel-image-2.4.18-1-k6.

Either configure the kernel source using the config file in /boot, or
use the kernel headers package instead the source package (probably
easier).

kernel
image, for example
apt-get install kernel-image-2.2.20
or
apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-1-$arch
Most of the kernel image packages have the driver you need. Use
apt-cache search kernel-image
to get a list and
apt-cache show name_of_package
to get more info on an specific package
en you boot from the CD,
they will tell you how to select the installation kernel.

easier to setup and generally a better choice, but it is not impossible
to use winmodems.

This is not a font problem. You need to load a driver. Try:
modprobe nls_iso8859-1

desktop systems (at least many people use it, I use Woody with KDE 3),

is to configure X with debconf:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
(if you use XFree 4)
There are also some packages that can help you get information about
your hardware, for example hwdata, discover and read-edid (to read your
monitor capabilities).

Did you set any other parameters than DMA the first time you used
hdparm? Did you set a specific DMA mode? Which mode does the drive use
if you use hdparm with the initscript?
rse upgrade
your kernel image to the woody packages (2.2.20 and 2.4.18) later if
you want.
