My search attempts likely failed because I didn't know the appropriate
terms.
After some initial inactivity the screen blanks and can can be brought
back to life by mouse movement.
After a longer period of inactivity one must touch the power button.
What are the correct names for these states
It should "just work" - if you can "ssh localhost" - the server is running.
Hope this helps

Hello,
That blank screen means your hardware has not found the way to load your
boot partition. Verify your BIOS configuration. Try toggling between UEFI
and MBR assuming your bootable device is ok.

Yes. Unfortunately Systemd decided to forbid '/' in unit names, and also
to map all mounts to units. '

Thanks for the reply. The problem is solved, and I'll mention the solution
here with maybe more details in replies to Greg Wooledge and/or Jonathan

Fascinating.
When I wake up from suspend, my Debian machines take a "long" time to
reconnect to the wifi. Looking at the `nm-applet` icon in my XFCE4
panel, I see:
- for about 10s the icon is "two computers" (which IIUC represents
just NetworkManager).
- then the icon changes to the one representing a wired

You could set up networkmanager so that it ignores the ethernet port.
That should save you some time.

The problem stops when xcompmgr is not running.
xcompmgr + terminator = problem
I choose terminator above eye candy stuff.

Notice the apple-vs-oranges here.
I'm talking about the time to reconnect to wifi after wake-up
from suspend.
Time to boot is

Nothing I can see there seems relevant, no. I just see the messages
about when the connection is done.

It doesn't need to.

Also check the priorities of your WiFi and Ethernet connections. Mine
are: Ethernet, -999; all WiFi, 0.

Why doesn't it start with the last active connection?
I suspect that for 99% of the users this will be the most common case.
Also, why does it wait 10s before it tries to

I couldn't help notice how many of you suggested a Raspberry Pi as a
better alternative to trying to use an old PC, in answer to a recent
question.
I wondered if some of you would care to join a small user group in
