Synaptic is just a graphical frontend progr
You need to add repositories. From synaptic, go to "Settings" -->
"Repositories". This alters the /etc/apt/sources.list file. You can
see an example in "Help" --> "Contents" --> "Repositories". There is a
list of download mirrors/repositories at
http://www.debian.org/mirror/list .

Just installed debian 3.1 and i have a strange problem. I've had it once
before, but it dissapeared by it self.

it's normal behavior: 'dpkg -l' shows the installed packages. If you
want to know which packages are available, you should use apt-cache.
I generally use 'apt-cache search '.
Then you can have a look at the found packages using 'apt-cache show
', and at last install it using 'apt-get install

got a real mystery.In fedora c3 or even in extix (exton knoppix) witch
is based on debian like I have "sarge" it is no trouble at all to
recognize my camera or mp3 player or then the maxtor usb driveit

prompt, instead I get the tilde (~) character for those buttons. I'm using
the ISO-8859-2 locale (if itt matters).
