Assuming you are using sarge:

As you are using an IBM Thinkpad, there are a number of tools available
after install:

apt-cache search

tpb - program to use the IBM ThinkPad(tm) special keys
tpctl - IBM ThinkPad hardware configuration tools

Also there is the IBM thinkpad linux mailing list at:
