I am new to debian.
When i try to start x it crashes giving me the message
"could not open default font 'fixed'".
I have checked the FontPath and font directories for
fonts.dir and everything appears to be ok after
reading the Fonts-HOWTO.
Is there an obvious solution to this problem?

Thanks for the quick reply. I have a small network with several RedHat
machines, a Slackware machine, and now a Debian machine. I'm considering
migrating all to Debian because I think apt-get is the best way to

I suggest MPlayer. It's not a debian package, nor will it be, so you
have to compile it yourself. It does have a lot of supported file
formats though (divx, mpeg, avi, dvd, etc...).

I upgraded koffice to the most recent version in woody (1.1.1-6, before IIRC
1.1-beta) and most applications don't even start any more. Example:

Yeseterday I made the mistake of copying over /etc/apt/sources.list from a
working machine to
another working machine. But I forgot to copu /etc/apt/preferences :-( The I
turned dselect
loose. Big mistake.

Replying to my own post. Here's what I tried:
I "apt-get remove"d fluxbox. That worked without any problems. I commented
out "set -e" in the "/var/lib/dpkg/info/gdm.prerm" script, since I guessed
it might be the culprit. Reran "apt-get remove gdm" ==> same problem (hung

It sounds to me like what you want to do is not have VNC start gdm, but
the other way around. Gdm spawns, and respawns, X servers. Xvnc is an X
serv

I have an interesting Ethernet problem. I'm on Potato, dually set up --
on two different HDDs
