Sounds to me like the infamous Netscape wrapper hit.
If you get into something similar, run TOP and also look at CPU percentage.
When netscape decides to get antsy, it will start trying to grab all your CPU
cycles so CPU and load should be hittign the roof.
As to the Kills not freeing memory...umm.

first having an ibm drive, which was spinning down after 5 minutes, that
annoying behaviour wasn´t changeable even with hdparms :/
then another hdd (a seagate iirc) started dying with this error; I think
that happens when the drive moves data to other places,
the fqdn of your ppp-peer suggests that it´s a Livingston Portmaster 3,
there are some OS-versions that generate this behaviour[1]. Ask your ISP
if they have a box running an older ComOS for testing...

time and reset the system clock.
I didn't pay much attention then 'cause I thought the script I used to
use with RH would work. They don't. (No 'rdate' and no 'clock').

Rdate is it's own package (in main/net)--a consequence of the Great Netstd
Shakeup. I'm kind of guessing you need to look into hwclock (in
main/base/util-linux) as a replacement for clock (I've never really dealt
with RH's clock, so I'm feeling around in the dark on this one). Having
said this,
Netstd is dead: there were issues with conflicting copyrights IIRC. rdate
is in its own package ATM.

another hard drive. I've had problems in the past with Maxtor 8.6Gb hard
