PAP/CHAP.
The same problem occurs when I try to connect to a modem on my Linux
server, which is set up for just PAP. For this connection, I dial in
using PAP only as well.

Pppconfig can detect the modem intself if it is on /dev/ttyS[0-4].

I believe you forgot to uncomment the line which reads " (INT 0 (IRQ 3 (MODE

What are you seeing in /var/log/messages ?
(use "tail -f /var/log/messages" before you initiate the connection.)
This will tell you about the interaction with the isp.

I have a Us Robotics 33.6 Internal modem, it has

I may be all wet here, but are you sure it's ttyS1? If your laptop is
like mine, it probably has onboard serial that forces your PCMCIA modem

it for me, and un-symlink it when I pop the card out--really slick--I

I am trying to use a modem PCMCIA card with a laptop. The card is

I just got a new computer and loaded Debian on it. I've managed to switch
modems (it came with a winmodem) and after about a week of struggle
managed to get it to log on to my ISP...and now I know why it was so
difficult. My modem/computer only seems to be getting the first 10-20

Your /etc/resolv.conf may need to be fixed.
Oki
add your DNS's to /etc/resolv.conf :
nameserver 1.2.3.4
nameserver 5.6.7.8
if you dont know the Domain name servers of your isp its easiest to do a
WHOIS on the domain (from a machine that has a working DNS config) and
then resolve the names internic gives you and use them.

you'll need to add the ip addresses of your ISP's
nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

the

have used it with Windows.

The modem is installed and works under Win95 using Com 2, irq 3, 2F8, it is
a pnp capable modem but I have configured it using the jumpers provided.
