I've consulted the Sound-HOWTO, the SoundBlaster-HOWTO, the
Kernel-HOWTO, and various emails from the arhives and Dejanews. Yet I
still have no sound.

You really need to be able to understand what is located inside your
computer, and how to find information that is needed.
Start->Control Panel->System->Sound (expand it to the list of sound
devices)->single click on soudn card->Click on properties->On the top bar,
click on Resources.

For starters you could tell what card you have, whether it's PnP or not,
what settings you have for it (Boot into Windows to get the settings, like
DMA, IRQ, IO).
