firefox work great, but the problem apps fonts are so tiny as to be
near-unreadable.

I need to convert a mess of mp3 files into PCM 8000 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono wav
format. I tried using mpg123 and sox :
mpg123 -b 1 -s test.mp3 | sox -t raw -r 8000 -s -w -c 2 - test.wav
w/o success. The resulting wav file is molasses slow.

Result: I never get a return to a command prompt, and the system freezes after
several minutes. Using the k3b front end produces a system freeze as well,
when its splash screen locks on scanning system devices.
Please note that the -scanbus with /dev/hdc produces different results for
scsibus than -scanbus with ATAPI.
Using a 2.4 kernel with ide-scsi works perfectly.

After an apt-get install of Gnome (90+Mb downloaded), when choosing
gnome-session from the kdm menu I'm left with an xterm and an otherwise
pristine screen. I'm lost!
How do I configure this puppy?

any specific advice to offer, but I'd consider testing with one of the live
distros (Knoppix,Mepis, etc) that boot up in 2.4.
Currently, either offer a superior debian installation experience over the
standard 3.0 CDs, imo, Mepis especially.
Good luck,

Can someone direct me to a C++ mailing list that is newbie-friendly?

A lot of packages is a bit of an understatement. In my case, over 250Mb
packages are queued for removal, including what looks like all of KDE. I'd be
just as well off wiping my drive and re-installing :)
Won't waiting a few days solve the problem?

I guess it's a losing battle...
All my incoming HTML email is captured by spamassassin and routed to the spam
folder. It's sadly amusing to find someone lambasting AOL users posting here
in that format.
Please don't email using HTML...

Since doing a sid apt-get dist-upgrade yesterday, many websites are showing up
with square blocks for certain characters, mainly the apostrophe. Is this a
fontconfig issue? How can I fix it?

I have just started hosting a domain on my server for my granddaughter and the

She's 200 miles away...how can I set this up to avoid the ugly open relay
problem?
TIA

t scraping web pages for addresses is more prevalent than spammers
trolling usenet or listservs for victims. Personally, I don't see web
obfuscation as a huge loss or as a violation of debian principles. It would
close a gaping hole, and probably harm no one (except spammers).
