I'd installed the lastest unstable package of libc6 (2.1) on my linux
box, meanwhile I tried to downgrade (reason: get java development to
work on it) it for a stable package.

Huh? slinks version number is 2.1, slink actualy ships 2.0.36 of the kernel.
Two completely separate version number schemes.
Slink should work fine with 2.2.x kernels though.

Having already upgraded to glibc 2.1 and reading recommendations that
one should upgrade to potato if using glibc 2.1, I decided last night to
give it a go.
I have only a dial-up connection and 56K modem. I entered apt-get update
and then apt-get dist-upgrade and went to be. In the morning, 7 hour
I tried to install word perfect for linux on my system.
first time around i installed as root and when i tried to open the
program i got a message: can't open libXt.so.6
second time i installed as a regular user and i got a message: floating
point exception.
Both times i got a message when running
Suddenly I am no longer getting the name/password prompt after boot.
Now the prompt issh-2.01# and seems to give root priveleges without
query. Is there a way to get back to proper security prompt???

The only MP3 encoder for Linux that I am aware of (Blade's MP3 Encoder)
can be found at http://home.swipnet.se/~w-82625/ . I heard rumours of
commercial encoders for Linux, but why bother: Blade's encoder works
quite nicely. I doubt that you'll find a .deb package, though.

Hi,
I've just installed a new tape drive, but I can find no
documentation on how to use it. Do I just write cron jobs to
tar -zcvf {files} /dev/sct0 ?
and how do I do incremental backups and restores, please?

You also need to include the ProxyRequests directive in the
/etc/apache/http.conf file.
At the end of this file just add the following lines:
