Well I tend to use "they" / "their" myself, which is in fairly common
usage. e.g.:
If a student falls asleep in class, they will probably absorb the

I boot the computer. I log into KDE which tries to restore my last
session. My last session had kicker at the bottom of the screen, a
child panel at the top and a knewsticker applet in the child panel.
