I was all set to install version 2.2 from CD to a G4 before I read in the
archives about problems with the Adaptec 2906 SCSI card. My plan was to
install on an external SCSI drive which is connected by that card. Is this not
going to work and/or going to create serious problems? Would a later

I finally have things up and running on the G4, but I'm stuck on a couple of
snags: pppconfig can't figure out where the modem is and it's asking... me.
I've tried a few guesses, but with no evidence of success. Also, startx is
failing, saying "cannot open mouse (no such file or directory)".
I think I may have obscured the issue with earlier posts, so let me back up and
start over. I have recently installed potato on a G4. Installed Xwindows, from
CD. The configuration gave me the message that it couldnt determine the video
card and, I think, stopped. At least, it didnt ask any

Matt,
Thanks for your reply. My original post said a new installation on
a G4 of potato. The video card is a Rage 128 Pro. The version of X is 3.3.6.
I was coming to the same
conclusion about a later version having the necessary driver. I guess
my next question is, do I need to upgrade the who

rather than the whole system? Any advice here would be most appreciated.
Thanks again for you reply.

Colin and Damien,
Thanks for the response. My situation, which you guys, Colin in
particular, may remember from previous posts, is that I'm booting
the system from the install CD. Which is, I think, taking the
kernel from the install CD. All efforts so far to burn a new
bootable CD have failed.
I have another mystery plaguing me here. I seem to have the IP connection
happening (to judge from plog), but am unable to connect to anywhere (to judge
from ping) whether I use the URL (which gives me unknown host) or the numerical
designation (which gives me x packets sent, 0 packets returned
ce on that, I would most appreciate it. Also, one
further bit of info: lynx gives me a message "lynx: Can't access
startfile http://www.snet.net"; (my IP). Thanks again.

Still trying to get X running on my G4.
It still says it has no mouse file, and
it's right. What's in /etc/X11/XF86Config
is:
Protocol "BusMouse"
Device "/dev/mouse"
I changed BusMouse to IMPS/2, which, from
reading the lists I *think* is right (Apple
USB optical mouse), and X didn't object,
ctify it? Any help would be
most appreciated.

Georg and Andy,
Alas, sorry to come back with bad news, and if you're
getting sick of this, I can't blame you, so am I.
Anyway, tried your suggestions with the following

Georg, Andrew, Michel, and Russell,
I am going to answer everybody who's helped in one post,
rather than clog up everybody's mail box.
First, thanks to everybody for all their help and tolerance
for my ignorance, I really appreciate it.
Second, answers to questions people asked:

of anybody else out there who runs into the same problem, the

I have been booting the (installed) system off the installation CD, which works
great. (G4, potato, installed on external scsi drive, non BIOS scsi card). I
would like to be able to create CDs to boot from - either for backup for when I

Hi (again) everybody. I am (again) in need of
some assistance.
I have been trying to boot a new kernel (Ive
tried both a 2.4 and a 2.6) off CD while pointing
it at my installed (by potato-2.2.17) root
filesystem (on a G4). It boots up OK, with two
(fairly problematical) exceptions. One, it
Chris,
Thanks a lot. That was exactly what i was after.
It does still leave me with a question or two,
however. The last two lines of that document
appear to be (more or less) what I need to do:
cd /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/
cp mac-usb-us.kmap.gz
/etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz
But,...
Chris,
Thanks again. That gets me most of the way,
but leaves me with one (hopefully) last question.
I have no file mac-usb-us.kmap.gz to use. Its
not in /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty (is an
i386 directory where its really supposed to
be?). Neither is it anywhere else that I can find.
Chris,
I decided to take your advice
and give apt-get another chance, following your
settings and recommendations and it worked
perfectly. It really is a remarkable and
impressive phenomenon.
Thanks.
However, it didn't get startx to work, though, but
at least it gave me a different error
