The only way I know to fix this is:
Boot on a bootable System 7.x or MacOS 8.x floppy
Double-click "Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5"

Perhaps a dumb question but...
I don't need the external vga ouput all the time. In fact I only need it
when I make presentations with a beamer, that is once every three months.
Should I keep using the xorg.conf with the external VGA outpu
