Well, with libncurses5-dev, "make menuconfig" gives me a menu. But the menu breaks when I try to select the framebuffer menu. And I notice that xconfig won't give me the "advanced framebuffer" menu, and fails to set any framebuffer fonts at all. Hence "make vmlinux" fails. fbcon.c: In function `f
