machine check in kernel mode: Adaptec 2906 SCSI card

I have an Adaptec 2906 SCSI card installed in a G4 tower. This is the sort of thing that happens when I boot just about any kernel except for 2.4.20-pre5-ben0: (this output was from trying out 2.4.23-pre5-ben0, precompiled from ppckernel.org): SCSI Subsystem driver Revision 1.00 Machine check in
