I had the same problem. The CD has a x86 boot sector which is unusable
for a mac. Don't ask me my it is there by "file -s" showed me this problem
Press Alt+Apple+O+F after power on until you see a shell prompt. Type
there "boot cd:,\install\powermac\yaboot" and enjoy the debian installer.

I burned with a linux on i386. I've got my image from an mirror while the
offical source was offline.
