This is confusing to me, too. But there is no difference, what
dmesg shows as ttyS03 is the device /dev/ttyS3 ,
see InfraRed-HOWTO ;-)

Hi,
after reading this thread I decided to once again try to get IrDA running on my
laptop.
I tried to find out which device it is using and got the following output:
$ dmesg | grep tty
ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS03 at 0x02e8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
ttyS1: LSR safety check engaged

setserial should be applied to *real* serial devices, like
/dev/ttySx , also it's only neccessary in some rare cases.
You didn't mention the configuration of /etc/irda.conf ,
set the SIR device etc. there and restart IrDA.
Then watch irdad
Hello,
I don't find out to verify if my IrDA port works
on my Nec VERSA VX1 notebook :-|
it's unabled in the bios and the ttyS3 is then discovered.
The modules are lauch, the devices seem ok
I put a Siemmens S45 front of the irda port, I use minicom
