setserial should be applied to *real* serial devices, like /dev/ttySx , also it's only neccessary in some rare cases. You didn't mention the configuration of /etc/irda.conf , set the SIR device etc. there and restart IrDA. Then watch irdadump , if this detects all the IrDA devices you can go further.
