/dev/mouse in /etc/XF86Config and I linked
ln -s /dev/psaux /dev/mouse. Does anyone have an idea what
to do next or how I might probe to check it out?

It sounds like startx doesn't start any wm for you. Try
"echo twm > ~/.xinitrc"
and then startx.

there.. ( on my HP the touchpad is a ps/2 device, can't say
for sure about the VAIO )
