G'Day !

Which window manager are you using ?

I use the default settings in fvwm2, and when I start X I get a very similar
screen. Have you tried playing with the mouse or keyboard buttons ? fvwm2 uses
a pop-up menu to launch applications, including xterm.

cheers,

I dealt with the login problem by removing xdm, so I can login
at the ordinary prompt.

The x system is still not configured right, however. When I
type startx I just get a blank, grainy screen.

How do you mean "input ... not recognized"? If you don't have
a window manager installed, (perhaps by default WindowMaker?)
you can input ids and passwords all day, but you won't get
anywhere.
