If it's of any help, I would recommend compiling X from cvs sources.
I'm doing this on my laptop (with i830 graphics) and my main system
(with ATI 9100), both Debian unstable, and have DRI working perfectly.

This laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon LY 32M AGP graphics card.
