The Problem is that /etc/gdm/Sessions/* aren't read anymore, from now on
sessionfiles should go into /etc/dm/Sessions/ (but as far as I can see
part of them go into /usr/share/xsessions/. At least gnome.desktop did)

hi,
this is a known "bug", as of version 2.4.4.7, changed the format of the
session files (I believe to the same as kdm uses) and now the old ones
are not recogniced any more.
now you have two (three) possibilities:
1. Downgrade gdm.

Hi,
There was a thread earlier on this list named "No fsck in battery mode".
There's explained why you shouldn't stop regular fs-checks even if you
use a journaling-FS.
Hope this helps,
Marcel

I don't know if it is possible to tell Debian not to use APM at all.
But at least you can run dselect after you ran tasksel and then
"unselect" the apmd package.
And you can add a line to /etc/lilo.conf: append="apm=off".
You can add this line somewhere on the top of the file, so it applies to
all
Hello,
As it seems to me you are using a testing system with some unstable
packages.
In your case you have three possibilities:
1. try to uninstall libcomerr2 (and all packages depending on it) and
then install the e2fsprogs from testing (1.33+1.34-WIP-2003.05.21-2).
or
2. install the e2fsprogs fr

this are (as of Kernel 2.4.21) WE v15. But you can get a patch for
kernel 2.4.21 to get WE v16 at
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Tools.html but I
don't know if they work with the Debian kernel.
I hope this helps a bit.

It works. Thanks to all.
Your (Mattia's) suggestion with the Intel PIIXn chipset was correct. But
now I think the name and the description of this driver isn't very good.
There are only things telling about PIO modes and nothing about DMA or
supported chipsets (like ICH3M in my case).
Thanks anyw

the HD should be able to handle DMA because I was able to enable it with
hdparm and an kernel 2.4.20.

A "hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda" reports:
/dev/hda:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma= 0 (off)
Has anybody a hint why this can happen or at least where I can get some
answers?
Thanks in advance
