at LILO was causing some problems
for me. Going with GRUB changed something which allowed hibernation
to work. Perhaps it allowed the BIOS to find the hibernation
partition.

potato to set /usr/bin

x-window-manager /usr/bin/ PRIORITY
Where PRIORITY is a number higher than the highest existing priority
for the x-window-manager alternative. You can ge ta list of
priorities with:
update-alternatives --display x-window-manager
