I just downloaded the source for 2.4.20 and compiled it. I was surprised at
how relatively painless the whole process was.
After I did make install to install the new kernel and then built the

I am biased -- I do work for HP. Nonetheless, mine seems to
work okay. I've been running Debian sid for some time without
any sort of grief. Even though it is a winmodem, there is a
Lucent binary-only driver that works. The only hazard may be
the wireless module (a W200 -- it sits on the back o

which installed where the main drive sits. (I needed
the CD-ROM). I move
I prefer IBM Thinkpad. I installed some Suse versions on notebooks of
the A series and had never any problems. Installing the system using
the default installation mode was not problem.

Imho you should try an Apple iBook or PowerBook. They have good displays,
leight weight and are well supported. the components are good (ati radeon
mobility, geforce 4 go, 100mbit lan, airport extreme, firewire, cdrw / dvd rw).
but the PowerBooks are a bit expensive.
