The removal of the v4l backend breaks image capture for all v4l sources, not

I stumbled across this when trying to backup to an encrypted USB 2.0 HDD.
The device would unlock and mount fine (mount reports rw), but any attempt
to modify or copy files to it caused an 'no space left on device' error,

xcam also fails to display or capture any image from the Philips
webcam. Upon pressing the 'Play' button, an error message box pops up:
"Failed to start webcam: Invalid argument"
After jumping between the other available devices, upon selecting the
webcam (pwc) device, xcam terminates immediately:
