according to C99, so the compiler may probably optimise
*all* of “if (&_IO_stdin_used == NULL) { … }” away. (That’s
because of the definition of NULL and object pointers.)

Michael was on the right track. I don't know why but xdg-user-dirs wasn't
installed. If you install this tool it will automatically take care of
managing all important user directories. You can tweak this behaviour
in
$HOME./config/user-dirs
