I just ran into this problem. It turned out that I did not have a recent
enough version of the kernel module packages installed; but I didn't
notice because of the rather confusing mismatch in version numbers
between versions of the package built with m-a and versions from the
Debian archive (2:2.6

I believe runlevel uses /var/run/*tmp, and guess its content is bogus.
Any idea what could mess up the utmp/wtmp files?

Frans,
I just tried the official Lenny CD #1 for i386 in VirtualBox and still
can't install LXDE. The choice of alternative desktop environments during
the boot seems to be gone. And later tasksel just offers the "Desktop"
task.
Mind if we re-open this report.
