Learning more about DirectFB, I found that in the file
/usr/share/doc/libdirectfb-1.2-9/README.gz
it is documented that Caps-lock/"Meta"/"Windows"-F12
performs a screen refresh, solving the problem.
Maybe if some of the hot-key information in this file
could be mentioned in the man page for Dir

Problem solved by upgrading libebml3.
Maybe I'm missing something, but shouldn't that

I don't know if starting once in safe mode had anything to do
with it, but now I don't seem to be experienceing the problem.
Seems to be responding just fine to -new-tab.
