The password for root contains numbers, I thought I had also tried the use
the numbers in the top row of the keyboard, but apparently not.
It appears that the numpad does not work for tty. When I use the top row
for the numbers I can login as root.

As far as I understand the Debian repository system, the fix for this
problem will not be in the upcoming wheezy (testing) release; nor in the
next one, sid (unstable). It still seems to be pending in experimental
