and 2.6 kernels alike, without patches).

However since this is a critical bug I wanted to make sure it was

Here's the initramfs hook script I'm using. It just copies
/etc/console-setup and /bin/setupcon into the initramfs wholesale, and
relies on udev to trigger the setting of
ksums, but these are also served over insecure HTTP.
What is the secure way to download and verify these files?

While I agree there aren't that many people who use RCS directly, it
is certainly one of those things I expect to be on a Unix system as a
basic tool.
I think you may break the expectations of people coming from other operating systems
if you don't make RCS standard.

installing to an alpha (specifically multia) which has no disk devices.
Boots fine. Mounts root over NFS fine. Downloads files from the network

My opinion is that list-devices is at fault, not iso-scan.
The hack I've tried this time didn't seem to slow the installer down so
much, so I've included a patch just in case it's useful.
I just tested the install process again by modifying iso-scan.postinst by
hand, switching disk for partition in the DEVS= statement and found that
it worked quite well to allow the installation to proceed smoothly.
Again, this made it work for me, but YMMV.

I just tried a root-on-RAID1 setup and the only issue was that GRUB was
only installed to the MBR of the first hard disk, so when I simulated
the failure of the first disk, the system would not boot.
