I have found a simple workaround for this bug.
At the main installer screen, press Alt+F2 to move to a virtual console
and press Enter to activate it. Then type
echo stable > /etc/udebs-source
Press Alt+F1 to get back to the main installer and then continue as normal.

Nothing happens when i reboot in debian (the option is visible, but
after selecting it just gives a welcome text and then a black screen)

Why not re-impliment the installer in a more OS neautral way (plugins for
different kernel/userland types) instead of porting it?
That way it will look and feel and act (hopefully) the same as it currently
does, but now the code is future proof?
