I just upgraded Sheevaplug (not the eSATA version) from Lenny to
Squeeze, seems all OK.

I believe that is the only version that works properly with eSATA. In any case,
it is the version that's installed

You probably didn't pass the right parameters when booting or used the
wrong image.
