One other data point When it is booting, it comes up with a message
similar to can't mount devfs on /dev: no such device. I've checked the
initrd and /dev is there with w

The install goes well until it gets to the partitioning. Using the
sarge installer, partman hangs at 72%. Using the testing installer, it
crashes with can't get a pty: No such file or directory.
