Stus-List Starting to 'smile'

2015-12-20 Thread Ainslie via CnC-List
I acquired 'Spirit' this past summer, so I've just gone through my first haul-out. I examined the hull very carefully for blisters (none), and checked the keel for the C&C smile- also none. When I went to check on her this past week, I can now see a hair-line crack starting to appear where I think

We sailed Spirit home from Lake Ontario to Lake Huron in mid-October. It was a heck of a passage up Lake Erie (or, as my wife dubbed it: Lake Eerie!) with 20-25 kts on the nose, and a week at dock waiting for a gale to pass. The height of the waves coupled with short period (due to shallow waters)

Stus-List Removing prop

Hi. I want to remove the propeller from my 35-3. It's a fixed 3-blade (15 R 14), and I'm looking for a folding prop. I have a line on a used one, but want to be sure about shaft fit etc. The question is: how do I brace the shaft to get the nut off? Put it in gear? Put a pipe-wrench to the anode on

Stus-List Keel Smile

2016-03-19 Thread Ainslie via CnC-List
My keel joint seems to be opening up; there wasn't much sign of it at haul out, but now it's noticeable. Also, you can see something oozing from the crack. Whatever it is has an oily texture so I'm guessing it's coming from the bilge. In the first photo, the vertical stain is the same oily ooze com

My 35-3 has the same issue. The PO advised me about it, and we experienced it a bit while sailing her home last fall. Launched and sailed today and it was knocking a little more than last fall. But I recall someone on the list said to make sure the shifter lever is hard ahead. Mine wasn’t. When

Re: Stus-List Adjustable backstay?

I recently did the procedure Alan describes on my 35-3, using the main halyard and a six-pack for weight. With the boom slightly off to starboard, I used tape as markers on the boom for each of my ‘soundings’. I started with no tension on the hydraulic backstay, and progressed to 500 kpsi, 1000, an

I have the 3GMD engine in my 35-3, with tranny gear ratio of 2.61. The PO had a fixed 3-blade prop that was 15" diameter, 14 pitch. I replaced it this year with a Flex-o-Fold 2 blade geared prop that is 15" with 12 pitch. Both props push the boat to 7.5 kts in the 3200rpm range, and I get boat spee

Agreed. I believe I'm facing this task sometime in the future on my 35-3, and I've read Dave's blogs several times over just to acquaint myself with procedures. It appears Dave was able to do this with the keel attached, so that makes the job seem somewhat less daunting. But not much! It would be i

Hello, The stuffing box on my 35 Mk 3 had a steady drip last fall, so I repacked it recently. According to my callipers, I could use ¼” flax in the gland nut (1” shaft). This seemed to pack in easily enough, but I was only able to get three rings in and still have enough threads on the nut. Howeve

I appreciate the comments from everyone. The 1/4 inch packing I used went into the gland nut with just finger pressure, so I'm assuming it won't be so snug as to overheat the shaft. I tightened the gland nut only by hand. I have an IR thermometer at the ready for Wednesday's launch to monitor heat
