Hi Andrew
Does it have a frame?? Is it all one piece? Approximate weight? Does it have
access doors? Any photos? If applicable can you advise the PO contact info to
get answers?

Thanks to all for the great advice!
After 30+ years, perhaps it is time for replacements?
Can anyone comment on the working load capacity needed for jib sheets for a
36-foot boat? We're not racing. I'm fond of Garhauer gear ($$!).Garhauer Marine

I bought a pair of 40SN at Strictly Sail, Chicago. They are nice pieces
of equipment. They are my consistent use snatch blocks. My Redwing 35
doesn't have cars like the 36 so my Jib sheets go to the snatch blocks
on the inboard track.

Have you looked at the sheet load calculators?
Harken has one: http://www.harken.com/content.aspx?id=9096
L-36 has a more sophisticated one: http://l-36.com/wind_load.php
Samson has a formula:

Interesting , my helm seat (33mkii) is attached by 8 sets of nuts and bolts and
minimal access to port side set. (propane locker on starboard allows access,
port side lid sealed at factory).
Not ideal .

Hi Randy,
You sound like you're having a lot of fun racing. You are definitely doing some
things right.
Here's some things I would think about::
I had to look up the Beaufort scale to see you had 11 to 16 knots gusting 17 to
21. You should have been sailing at hullspeed on all points of sail.
Thanks Chuck. I'm having a blast.
My knot meter was indicating 5.5-6.25 knots depending on point of sail, but I
don't know if it's calibrated perfectly. I didn't have RaceQs running this
time, to check it against GPS. My theoretical max hull speed is ~6.67 knots.
But a month ago the wind piped
Chris,
It sounds like the pitch of your prop may be too high. Several of us on the
list have been told by "experts" that X" of pitch was the correct amount for
our engine / gear reduction / boat, only to get excessive vibration and not
be able to reach anything close to maximum RPM even in a full
Randy,
nice job! Its all about VMG. If you don't have a chart plotter, something
like the iRegatta app can calculate it for you if you put in a waypoint.
Tough to beat DDW with main and jib.

We had a very light wind race on Wednesday and the downwind leg was a reach to
broad reach I could not get the genoa to sit well and then I noticed one of
the other boats had the whisker pole to leeward holding the clew out. I tried
it and it seemed to help. Is this something others do? Dave
Hi David,
Yeah we do it all the time, it's also called a reaching strut. On our
boats, the whisker pole is overkill and kind of too big / heavy anyway.
Since we only do it in very light winds I just get Nicholas to grab the
boat hook, push the clew out with it, hold it by hand / prop it on th

Hi David,
The pole projects the most sail area out from the mast, it stabilizes the
genoa, so rolling doesn't spill your wind. It' a lot of prep and effort to rig
all the lines, but worth it. I did a solo 10 mile downwind leg wing and wing
and rigged a preventer on the boom and the pole on the
Just a couple comments. First, poles to leeward may be illegal in some
venues. Read the SI's (Sailing Instructions).
Second, a reaching strut holds the spinnaker guy outboard to increase the
angle and take load off the guy and compressive load off the spin pole.
Third, holding a sail out by han
Yes.
And if you use a pole that is within the limits for spinnaker pole length,
normally the J dimension, then there is no penalty.
Pole must be attached at the mast, according to the rules.
I have a light weight spinnaker pole that is only used for poling out the
Genoa.
Useful in light air
I find the whisker pole quite easy to rig unless it is really windy and rough.
I have it attached semi-permanently to the spinnaker pole track fitting and
held vertically with the other end just sitting inside the mast base. Gravity
holds it in place. I raise the track to free it, rotate forw
If you are sailing under US Sailing rules,
the pole must be attached to mast, no longer than J measurement, and always
opposite side from the boom. You cannot hold any pole by hand.

I fully endorse the Drifter suggestion. We have (as a part of the
twenty something sails that came with Corsair) a 1/2 oz Drifter that
will get us a knot of boat speed for a knot of breeze. It has to be on
the deck when the true wind hits 8 knots. We baby this 1971 built sail

The boat hook: We only do it in really light winds 0-4 knots, were
talking glassy water on the lake. It's a cinch do undo and it's a cinch

We do sail under US Sailing rules and there are no stipulation whatsoever
about the length of the pole, it's attachment to the mast, or position

1. US Sailing rule 50 was changed years ago to allow a whisker pole to be set
either windward or leeward. Local rules may be different, and that also is
allowed under US Sailing rules.
2 A whisker pole is not a reaching strut.

Francois,
US SAILING Rule 50.2 clearly requires whisker or spinnaker pole to be
attached to mast. I think you will lose the argument at protest that you are
using a boat hook not a whisker pole and therefore it doesn't have to be
attached but maybe not.
