Have you looked at the sheet load calculators?
Harken has one: http://www.harken.com/content.aspx?id=9096
L-36 has a more sophisticated one: http://l-36.com/wind_load.php
Samson has a formula:
(windspeed in mph)^2 x 0.004 x (sail area in square feet) = Sheet Load at Clew
in pounds

I would have a hard time imagining that you have a working load higher than the
2800 lb that is listed for a SN40. (btw. Garhauer uses the number in their
series that is somewhat related to the boat length, so the 30-series is for
boats 30 ft in length, 40 series – for 40 ft boats, etc.).

Thanks to all for the great advice!

After 30+ years, perhaps it is time for replacements?

Can anyone comment on the working load capacity needed for jib sheets for a
36-foot boat? We're not racing. I'm fond of Garhauer gear ($$!).
