Mine secured by hex bolts with acorn nuts (8 - IIRC). I would not want to
have to fuss with that in an emergency though. Tim, it seems really odd to
me that that your port side locker does not operate. Both lockers on mine
are quite accessible and the parts a molded in such a way as to suggest
that operable lids would have been standard for both. Stbd locker is the
only one plumbed with hoses and tank for propane, port is a very useful
catch-all but it also has the drain plumbed and connected for propane.

To C-Dirk's post - I checked and need to check again, but I thought that
the inboard side of the cockpit locker was not cored, therefore would not
easily take screws. I will check that.

Further to all of this. I checked McMaster carr's website and they sell
threaded "hand knobs" in both stainless and aluminum. I will verify
dimensions and probably order the parts to make this tool-less, then
chamfer the bottom edge of the tiller bore, plus add an eye-strap to the
tiller itself. I can foresee wanting to heave-to in a situation that
might require the tiller, and being able to attach a line would be useful
indeed. A bracket on the cockpit locker wall makes the most sense, though
its configuration requires more rum and engineering... Thanks all for the
interesting discussion.

Interesting , my helm seat (33mkii) is attached by 8 sets of nuts and bolts
and minimal access to port side set. (propane locker on starboard allows
access, port side lid sealed at factory).
Not ideal .

We tied the wheel to the stern pulpit and the helm seat was stuffed into
the quarter-berth.
