Joel,
The squeezy bulb is not approved or the electric pump is not approved? I'd
be interested in seeing that regulation.

I found a 1990 revision of the ABYC diesel section H-33. But couldn't find
any mention of a squeezy bulb. It was, from what I could tell, an old
revision and I was kinda skimming. Could have easily missed it.
I only question it because a squeezy was present on both boats we had
surveyed and the
Both my surveyor and mechanic flagged it on my Pearson. Mainesail has
posted that they are not approved.

Years ago I installed a basic fuel pump (auto parts store) not wired into the
ignition (separate toggle switch in engine room).
It is upstream of the racor and always off (flow-thru) and makes bleeding,
changing filters VERY easy.
That being said I wonder what the insurance company would say
I believe squeezy bulbs are an issue with USCG for below decks, because
there are no primer bulbs with a type A1 spec rating for use in fuel
line systems for inboard gasoline powered boats. There is no doubt room
for interpretation by anyone doing an "inspection" as to whether it is

Hi,
I have a simpler question: How often do you replace (or service) the fuel
filter? Once a season? Every 50 or 100 h?
It is a messy job, so obviously less often is easier, but certainly not better.
thanks

I can't access the regs without buying them. One bulb manufacturer states
that their bulbs meet H-25 standards. That is a gas engine standard.for
portable gas systems. H-33 is the diesel fuel system standard.

Marek,
At every oil change, which for me is annually. I don't have an hour
meter, but it is around the 50 hour mark. The prior owner of my boat had
the years-old fuel drained and tank cleaned before I bought the boat, so
there has been no need to do it more often.

If you keep your fuel clean and pure – use an aircraft filter when filling the
tank, change the O-ring on the filler cap every year – fuel filters can last a
long time.
I went more than two years, probably with 300-plus hours on the diesel, and
found both filters to be as good as new. I don’t
Squeeze bulbs come up about every 4 days or so on the Atomic 4 forum. They are
NOT approved for below-decks installs and they WILL leak sooner or later. My
dinghy squeeze bulbs are lucky to make it 2 years. I would *never* use one on a
gasoline inboard. I have installed them on diesel boats. The
I installed Racor's vacuum gauge in place of the T-handle on my 500 series
Racor. Tells me exactly when to change element.
On my Universal diesel, the electric fuel pump is wired to the pre-heat button.
It only runs when the button is pressed.

Thanks to the two people who responded to my question. I was going to do this
work last winter but... so it is now a next winter project. My thoughts were
to use Sikaflex on the toerail to deck joint and hull to deck joint once the

Depends on whether it's a twist-lock or line control. Go to the Forespar
web site, find your pole, and at the bottom of the page there should be a
care and feeding plus spare parts listing.

There was a very long discussion on the squeeze pump and diesel a while back (2

without problem by many (under the "relaxed boat code" an
HmmmI was thinking that maybe the bulbs don't have the correct 2 1/2

I am very sure they don't. The rubber used for interior fuel hose is VERY
thick. It is the functional equivalent of normal hose with a fire sleeve added.
Compare inboard and outboard fuel hose sometime.

They don't seem to have one in 2.5" OD currently, the biggest is the 7-15
with 2" tubing.
"ADJ 7-15-DL Whisker Pole, 83"/9lb. Collapsed Length/Weight, 202" Max.
Working Length, 2" Tubing Diameters"
Best bet might be to have all the measurements handy and call Forespar.

I’ve had a squeeze bulb on my 4JH engine for 7 years. The bulb is still
perfect. It makes filling the filter after a change a snap and easy to bleed
the air out of the system.

Just doing the teak and there has been a buildup over the years of varnish,
sawdust etc on the fibreglass near the teak. Can I use a paint stripper on it?
Can I just carefully scrape it away?___

Bev,
Paint stripper sounds like a great idea, but I have not tried it. I have
some drips on the non-skid, so it will not scrape off. If its dry tomorrow
I'll give it a shot!

No! It'll soften the gel coat. There may be some that don't but I haven't seen
them.

How about a 3M Stripe Off wheel on a drill? Basically it's a big round gum
eraser. Can find them at auto parts or auto body shop supply stores.
I'd be careful with a scraper. It will gouge the gelcoat.
