Stus-List Play in the steering
Alan,
Are you able to reach all of the bolts through the access ports? The nut
actually came off one of my forward bolts. I'm going to try putting a nut in a
socket and hope I get lucky enough to have it catch. I cant get my hand in

I have a selection of ratchet extenders on board, from 12" to 3", and
have used them more than once to place nuts on my boat. Handy ratchet
extenders, in my opinion, have rounded ends that allow a bit of play so
you don't have to line up the ratchet just exactly perfect. However, if

Dave,
Same thing happened to me. My cables came so loose they actually fell off
the radial wheel. The problem was the idler pulleys under the pedestal.
They mount on a plate which was made of mild steel. The plate corroded so
badly the pulleys moved enough to loosen the cables. I replaced m

Graham, that's how I got in there too, but I have a couple of access ports
in the well under the helm seat that Alan says can be used to get a wrench
on the nuts. Using those would have saved a lot of sweat wriggling around
under the cockpit. Now, has anyone made their helm seat "quick release"?

Alan,
Good to know the nuts can be reached through the access panels! I
discovered this weekend that one of mine has no nut. I was dreading trying
to crawl in there.

You may need to remove the cockpit drain hose in the port cockpit locker to
get to the quadrant (find a long, thin person would be my advice). Good
advice on the top bearing nuts - that took a lot of play out of my steering
when done last year.

David:
Center the wheel and lock it in place with the brake. Then tighten the four
screws that hold the bearing around the rudder post to the cockpit floor.
You'll have to remove the helm seat in order to reach in through the access
ports so you can hold the nuts with a wrench. Once that is d
David,
The big question, IMHO, is why is the steering loose now when it wasn’t
before. Chances are your cable is frayed and you should replace it ASAP.

After picking up our mooring and locking the wheel I felt something
"banging". I quickly found that the source was the rudder moving side to
side as the boat swung on the mooring. I went down below and found that the
steering cables were fairly slack and there was quite a bit of play, hence
