I doubt that ANY grounding technique would be able to ensure that the
instantaneous power from a lightning strike as so well illustrated in the video
could be ‘directed’ anywhere other than where it was going to go anyway!

This has intrigued me since I inspected the keel boats the very first time
on Tapestry. The bonding to the keel boats was made with two insulated
copper cables (looks to be 2 or 3 AWG). Poking around I found this
interesting presentation case study and product solutions.

I think you're close, but I'd make sure of the connection between mast and keel
bolt. The mast is key for conductance (aluminium is a much better conductor
than stainless steel). ABYC would require a 4AWG primary conductor for
lightning protection; a short strap from the mast to keel bolt would

Good evening. Last summer my neighbour's Aloha 27 took a lightning strike to
the masthead which fried the VHF antenna (and VHF), cooked the antenna wire
quick connect but caused no other visible damage. Small strike perhaps.
Luckily I suffered no damage from the strike 8 feet away.

With the talk of GPS etc storage in ovens, it got me thinking about lightning

chain plates on each side to the largest of my keel bolts. I hope this is
adequate protection but of course all lightning protection is purel

Ewen Thomson is the acknowledged U.S. expert on lightning and sailboats.
He used to be
capitalist and started a company that provides expensive
lightning protection systems for megayachts.
