The Dereks have the 33-2, Graham, but same concept as the 35-3. Several of
the 33 owners on the list have done substantial rebuilds to this area as
well.
I may have unwittingly dodged the bullet on this one. When I had my
floorboards out this spring I noticed (finally) that quite a bit of the

Hi Derek
I did do some repairs to that area. Hence I am sure it isn't balsa in
there. I'd be astounded if they used a balsa core in that area, it
would be a pretty inappropriate choice...

Hi Derek (s)
I can tell you it is not a balsa core, the keel sump under the mast step
is filled with a high density foam of some sort. Still smells bad tho'

What a coincidence Derek. My name is Derek and I have the exact same boat and
exact same problem. Apparently our boats have a defective keel sump. This is
the area under the mast step. What I have learned is that there is a balsa
wood core within the keel sump area. After years of use, especial

Hello Derek
Based on the year I'm assuming your boat is a 35-iii, if that is not
correct this info is invalid. The 35-3 has a cavity just inside the
forward wall of the bilge, and water can indeed get in there and
fester. It is about 2", full width, and all the way up from the
bottom. So a
