I don't think cutting the rudder tube would be my first choice. I will
probably go with attachment to the quadrant, even though there are risks
associated with that , also. Thanks for your help.

Hi Josh,
Now I understand that you had to cut the rudder post housing in order
to use the standard Edson arm. Thanks for the pictures.

I suspect if you try for Josh's set up you'll likely have to drop the
rudder to take to a machine shop to cut a key-way into it as there isn't
likely to be a slot for a key where you will need it.

I’m pretty sure I have the same setup as Ken, using an Octopus linear drive

That looks very stout. We don't have the plywood bulkhead running from the
rudder tube back to the transom on out boat. That would certainly help
make up for any loss of strength from cutting the rudder tube.
Our mount for the ram is similar to what Josh has but the ram is much
higher up, in the

This also can act as a nice backup if your quadrant somehow fails, allowing you
to still steer the boat.

Is the rudder shaft exposed under the deck (I haven't crawled down

That’s a standard Edson autopilot tiller arm; it’s the preferred way of
attaching the ram to the rudder post below-decks, assuming you’ve got enough
room to do that. Some of our C&Cs, mine included, won’t allow that luxury, so
the pilot’s ram needs to be attached (preferably to a reinforcement

There is normally also a small rod connecting the rudder position sensor to
the quadrant but it was removed before we took these photos.

I just bought a 37 Plus and want to install a below deck autopilot. Has
anyone done this? I am interested in the details of how (and where) to
mount the ram. Pictures would be wonderful.
