If I am unconscious, and off the boat, I'm dead anyway. I single hand a lot. Staying on the boat is more important than anything else. Lots of sailor are disabled by falls against hard objects on board, even without going overboard. Broken ribs make it pretty hard

Another tip which I forgot to include - In rough weather, I switch from an inflatable PFD to a jacket style one made of thick foam such as worn by jet skiers. It offers a lot of rib protection. If you fall overboard (or even on board) it increases your survival op
