We'll my number 54955 was issued by the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA), now called Sail Canada so that's how they did it in my case. It's numbering fits into the scheme in the US Sailing website quoted elsewhere. Ken H. Sail Canada - www.­sailing.­ca

In my experience, there are three ways to get a sail number: 1) Pick a number that you like that is less than 5 digits, and stick with it. I've known a few people who elected to do this - but that was primarily because they did not know that the sail numbers actually have a certain logic to them.

Paul, Originally, they were arbitrarily assigned. Sometimes it would have to do with the hull number; sometimes not. If you race your boat and would like something official, you can ask US Sailing to assign you a number, which will be 5-6 digits long. Alternatively, i
