Guys,
I've used Stugeron a lot and highly recommend it to all my crew when we go
offshore. I take it for the first 36 hours or so at sea and then that will
be it for the trip (that's just me though. I tend not to get seasick) The
only time I've had seasick crew is when one guy didn't take it.
Just check out the intensity (lumens) and get really bright ones that also have
low intensity and of course red.
I haven't sailed the Southern Ocean, but I've done a lot in the Atlantic and
Caribbean and I still haven't found a headlamp (including Petzl) that can stand
up to the salty goodness tha
Far be it for me to defend the Homeland Security bureaucracy and the fact
that they have very different clearance procedures depending where in the
US you clear in, and very rarely do the procedures agree with what's posted
on their website. I've cleared in at Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Newport,

I just got a new cruising permit a few weeks ago in Key West when we came
in from Mexico.
Somewhat surprisingly, it was no trouble whatsoever. Although my boat is
registered and I've had US cruising permits in the past so all my info was
already in their system.
We can bitch about it for a whi
Lots of folks use Mystery Oil in their diesel - I do (when I can remember
to pick some up)
Never tried it on the man parts, but if it does for those what it does for
the pistons on my Perkins, sign me up.

Yeah, the life raft is a big nut and one where you hope you never get your
money's worth from it.
I recertified my 6 man raft in 2014 and it was about $1100. Unless you are
going to do a bunch of offshore sailing, a rental may work out better.
Cheers

Sorry to hear Rich...
I'm sure BC will be nice, but so's Halifax and you'll miss the boat.
Give a shout when you're passing through Toronto... I know I owe you at
least a couple of rum drinks and I'd be happy to make good on that debt.
Cheers,
Colin

I'm late to the conversation but I have 8 golf cart batteries that gives me
900ah at 12 volts. Has worked well for me since 2009 and is cheaper per
ah per year than anything else I could find. You just need to find enough
space for them as they are tall.

Just because charts are digital doesn't mean they are accurate.
Many digital charts are based on soundings that may literally be hundreds
of years old and would certainly predate GPS.
I was in Panama this summer and my Navionics gold charts would have had me
drive over a bunch of reefs if I had l
Could be a good deal for someone.
I'll help with the delivery back to the continent.

I won't be sad to see West go. Their prices were good when they came in,
but I find them too expensive.
I have one within walking distance of my office, but I'd prefer to go just
about anywhere else.
I'm guessing most other Canadian boaters are the same Hence they head
back home.
Buh bye
Very cool. I've thought about taking Bojangles through there if I ever
bring her back north again.
As for the Falkirk Wheel, I've been on that... Incredibly cool, although
highly impractical given the small amount of traffic it gets.

There are always boats looking for race crew here, but if you're not in the
network of sailors it can be hard to get started.
If he has any sailing connections he should leverage them.
If not, print up a flyer and post it at all the chandlers and yacht clubs
in town. They all have bulletin board
Weighing in late here... yes a large sailboat is an insanely bad FINANCIAL
investment, but it's good for your soul.
I'm well over $200k into Bojangles (less than half of which is purchase
price) and I'd be lucky to get half that today.
For the last couple of years though, I've chartered her out s
I heard from Fred on Sunday as he was "ghosting down the Chesapeake".
Hopefully they have some wind by now.

I have both an SSB and satphone on board. I've also been offshore getting
smacked by the NE side of a named storm.
We used the SSB for regular updates with the nearest shore based station
(Bermuda Radio) and also used the SSB for sending and receiving email and
weather data. It's great for that
Stu... you've got to stop going out and signing people up for the list
without them knowing about it. :-)
